Ово је твој час, о Душо!
Твој слободни лет у тишину,
далеко од књига, далеко од уметности
избрисаног дана,
свршених предавања.
У потпуности у тебе утонути,
нечујно у тебе гледати,
разматрати теме које ти највише волиш
ноћ, сан и звезде.

Не затварајте врата

Не затварајте врата преда мном, горде библиотеке;
јер ја доносим оно што је недостајало на вашим препуним
полицама, а што највише треба;
из рата излазећи написао сам књигу;
ријечи су у њој ништа, а смјер је све.
Књигу обашка, без везе с другима, коју ум не схваћа,
али ће вас на свакој страници запрепастити нешто тајно, што није у ријечима.

Um mehr als sich selbst zu finden

Von der Flucht verlassen
tauche ich in die Begriffe ein,
die versuchen,
meine aktuelle Situation zu benennen.

Je klarer sie sich unterscheiden,
desto deutlicher überschneiden sie sich,
denn es gibt nicht einen diesen Begriffen,
der meine Lage einfach darstellen ließe.

Und die Suche geht immer weiter,
dessen nicht achtend:
denn ich möchte nicht verjähren.

I HEAR America singing, the varied carols I hear;
Those of mechanics—each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong;
The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his, as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work;
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat—the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck;
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench—the hatter singing as he stands;
The wood-cutter’s song—the ploughboy’s, on his way in the morning, or at the noon intermission, or at sundown;
The delicious singing of the mother—or of the young wife at work—or of the girl sewing or washing—Each singing what belongs to her, and to none else;
The day what belongs to the day—At night, the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing, with open mouths, their strong melodious songs.
